According to specialists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, melittin, a toxin found in bee venom, can be used to destroy HIV cells while not harming surrounding cells.

The National Center for Biotechnology Information and the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health published an article by Hood JL, Jallouk AP, Campbell N, Ratner L, and Wickline SA, research scientists at Washington University in St. Louis, MO that concluded that it is warranted to explore the antiviral prophylactic potential of melittin nanoparticles (toxin found in bee venom) to capture, disrupt and prevent initial infection with HIV-1 or potentially other enveloped viruses.
